David Baraff, President
David joined the Board in 2012 after realizing his two children, Rachel and Michael, had accumulated a combined total of over 14 years of association with the Piedmont Choir, and that it was past time for him to contribute as well! Formerly a Professor of Robotics and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, he left academia in 1998 to take a position as a Senior Animation Scientist at Pixar Animation Studios. Prior to joining Pixar, David co-founded a startup commercial software company whose products have been used in the production of numerous films. In 2006, he won an Academy Award for his research and software development in the field of computer animated clothing.
Shirley Pao, Vice President, Strategic Planning
Shirley has predominantly worked in the health care sector since moving to the Bay Area in 2000 and currently works in strategy and implementation for a health plan. She holds an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of business and has 10+ years of previous consulting experience to public/private companies across various industries. Shirley lives in Piedmont with her husband and two daughters, Zia and Veda, both of whom sing with PEBCC (in the performing and training departments respectively).
Leon Tuan, Treasurer
Leon first became involved in the Piedmont Choirs through his son, Eric, who spent 11 years with the Training and Performing Departments. Leon is also on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. He is an attorney with Stein & Lubin LLP in San Francisco, where he works on commercial real estate transactions and general business matters.
Annette Clear, Secretary
Annette joined the Board in 2010. She has worked for foundations in New York City, Tokyo, Jakarta, San Francisco and Phnom Penh. She later taught political science in Santa Cruz and a recent stint in Berkeley. She currently serves as a board member for Nihonmachi Little Friends, a bilingual preschool in San Francisco's Japantown, and for Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Science, a slightly larger educational institute in New York City. She lives in Piedmont with her husband Michael Begert, and three children who are all enthusiastic singers.
Janet joined the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir board in 2013 as a result of her love for music and the arts. She supports the choir because she believes that developing and nurturing the passion for music has a positive impact on children and the community.
In addition to serving on the PEBCC board, Janet has been involved in driving community development activities for the Asian American Donor Program and National Marrow Donor Program. She is a founding family member of Yu Ming Charter School and led fundraising activities as Gala Co-Chair for two consecutive years. Janet has led fundraising and membership activities for Alumni Relations at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts. She also serves on the Chi Omega Corporation Board at UC Berkeley.
Her work in the community allows her to connect and integrate with the diverse communities of the Bay Area. Janet is a successful business professional specializing in Human Capital Management and resides in San Leandro with her husband and twin daughters.
Genevieve sang with the Piedmont Choirs from 1988-1997, worked as a counselor and music theory teacher at Choir Camp for 4 years, and is excited to return as an alumni board member. She minored in music and conducted several choirs in college, and has continued to sing in various choral groups since. After 10 years as a research astronomer at UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, and Princeton, she is now the Chief Data Scientist at a small SF-based start-up, HiQ Labs. She lives in Santa Cruz with her husband Alex Lamb and young son Thorfinn.
Eric joined the PEBCC Board in 2012 due to his love for music and quality singing which started with him going to his first record store at the ripe old age of five. Being an honorary godfather to board member Jukka Valkonen’s daughter Annika it peaked his interest in the choir. Eric has a very young daughter himself that will hopefully join kinder choir in a few years. He took voice lessons in college at the University of the Pacific receiving a BA in Communications/Broadcasting. He started a radio show there on KUOP called the Progressive Connection from 1985-1990 spinning modern rock records of the day. He got a certificate in the Music Business from UCLA Extension from 1991-1994 also managing two record stores in Westwood and Santa Monica. Eric also ran a mobile DJ service for fifteen years being the disc jockey for private parties specializing in over fifty weddings. He currently manages and oversees real estate holdings in the Bay Area & central California and sells Blues, Jazz, Vocal and Soul records on Ebay through his website Antique Vinyl. Eric lives in Oakland with his wife Silvana and daughter Elodie.
Mike joined the board in 2011. Mike is an operations executive at Apple and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School. He has worked as a management consultant and held various leadership positions in the retail and apparel industries. Mike is the father of Olivia, who sings with Ancora. Olivia and her brother Connor attend Head-Royce High School. Mike and Randi have been strong supporters of the PEBCC program since Olivia joined the Training Department in 2004. The Lees live in Oakland.
Molly followed her daughter--who is in her third year of choir--and has fallen in love with the Choir. The Choir's high expectations, rich and diverse music selection, training in music theory, and camaraderie has given her daughter so much joy. Molly has a background in product management and marketing for financial services companies and an international school in Beijing. She has a long term interest in programs for youth having worked with at-risk youth in Philadelphia and Sydney and served on the boards of San Francisco's Enterprise for High School Students and the Piedmont Language School. Molly received an MBA from Yale University's School of Management and a BA from Brown University.
Sue first joined the Board and served as President when her youngest (now 30) was still in the Choirs and is now serving her second stint on the Board. She is celebrating, this year, over 37 years of service on various Boards of Directors, working primarily in Development and Fundraising. She is especially interested in ensuring that the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir can offer an affordable and quality musical education to children throughout the East Bay.
Ji and her husband Daniel are avid supporters of local schools and other youth organizations. Their daughter Ashleigh (8 years old) has been singing in the Choir for four years (started back in Kinder-Choir). Ashleigh’s love for singing is contagious in the Winkler household. Ji is looking to sing in a church choir in the near future. In addition to being a devoted mother to two school-age children, Ji works full time as a financial systems consultant for Genentech, Inc. in South San Francisco. She holds a MBA from UC Davis Graduate School of Management, focusing on information systems and finance. Ji looks forward to contributing to the Choir at a new level by serving on the board.
